Defining, diagnosing and treating
Head and neck cancer refers to a group of cancers that start in the mouth, nose, throat, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands. Because each kind of head and neck cancer is unique, our team is made up of specialists from various disciplines. Our multidisciplinary approach helps us tailor your treatment plan and all aspects of your care.
Head & Neck Cancer
Accurate diagnosis is a major part of Baptist MD Anderson’s unique approach to cancer care.
Head & Neck Cancer
The stage of a cancer refers to how much it has grown and whether the tumor has spread from its original location. There are five overall stages of cancer, stage 0 - stage 4. Stage 4 is considered the most advanced stage of cancer, meaning it has either spread to more areas or is more aggressive. Identifying the extent of you cancer can help your doctor determine the best course of treatment for you. As part of the diagnosis process, several tests help evaluate the cancer stage. Once you know the stage of your cancer, you and your doctor can use this information to decide on the best treatment option for you.
Getting the right diagnosis
A second opinion can be a game-changer for patients. While it is rare for a diagnosis to change from malignant to benign, a second opinion may reveal other information. Our team verifies whether your staging is correct, your tumor size is correct and your overall assessment is correct. All of these factors can affect which treatment options you are offered.
If you have any questions, we have you covered. We have nurse navigators available to guide you through every step of your care. Request an appointment or speak to a nurse navigator by phone or online.
