Advanced Radiation Therapy Close to Home
Finding the right team for radiation therapy can make all the difference. At Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center, you have access to a level of care that’s not widely available in the region.
We are the only program in our area with advanced accreditation in radiation oncology and one of a select few centers offering specialized radiopharmaceutical therapy. That means you can feel confident you’re receiving care that meets the highest standards for safety, quality and expertise.
Every treatment plan is personalized to your diagnosis, lifestyle and goals. Our multidisciplinary team works closely together to coordinate every part of your care so you feel supported, informed and guided from diagnosis through recovery.
What is radiation oncology?
Radiation oncology uses carefully targeted high-energy radiation to treat cancer and certain non-cancerous conditions. The goal is to destroy or damage cancer cells so they can no longer grow, while protecting as much healthy tissue as possible.
Radiation therapy works by damaging the DNA in cancer cells, preventing them from multiplying. Treatments are precisely planned for each patient, taking into account the size, shape and location of the tumor. Depending on your diagnosis, radiation therapy may be used on its own or combined with other treatments like surgery, chemotherapy or immunotherapy.
What conditions does it treat?
Our team uses radiation therapy to treat a wide range of cancers and conditions, including:
- Breast, prostate, lung and gastrointestinal (GI) cancers
- Gynecologic cancers
- Thyroid conditions
- Blood and bone marrow disorders
- Select non-cancerous conditions, including vascular conditions like arteriovenous malformations (AVMs)
